Tidal - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

A maritime expedition takes a deadly turn when its crew unleashes a beast that threatens to sink their facility.

Casey and Sei Mi, students in their university’s Class of 3059, are training to become marine biologists. In order to graduate, they must complete an internship in the Tidal Headquarters, a renowned research settlement that’s specifically built to study marine life.

At first, Casey and Sei Mi are ecstatic to explore the depths of the ocean. However, their expedition takes a deadly turn when their excavation tools hit an underwater cave, and they unleash a beast that is far more dangerous than the ones they have previously encountered.

Their enterprising adventure turns into a deadly race for survival once the creature proves to be smarter than they expected. Once it demolishes key areas of their facility, effectively stranding its crew in the middle of the Atlantic, it begins to pick them off one by one.

With help from their colleagues, Casey and Sei Mi must send the beast back into hibernation. Faced with a ticking clock and a failing base, will they banish the monster back into the ocean, or will they sink in its place?

Character List

Casey

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 25-30
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Headstrong and brave, Casey is a scientist with an insatiable thirst for adventure. Optimistic and spirited, he embraces his challenges with open arms. Unfortunately, this causes him to run headfirst into difficult situations without considering the consequences of his actions.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Our scanners have detected abnormal marine activity from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. We’re sending an excavation team in to get a closer look.

  2. (Happy) This is amazing! Once the public hears about our discovery, we’ll be rockstars!

  3. (Nervous) Captain, our seismographs are reporting tremors from the oceanic crust. These—these readings don’t look normal.

  4. (Afraid) Our facility is out of power, and our backup generators don’t seem to be working. What do we do now?

Sei Mi

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 18-20
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Intelligent and cautious, Sei Mi always has a plan for action. She calculates every risk before she approaches her challenges, and her rational mind has led her to make wise decisions. Despite her strengths, Sei Mi isn’t very good at thinking on the spot, and her anxiety gets the best of her when she’s stranded without a back-up plan.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) May I speak frankly, ma’m? We shouldn’t dispatch our excavation team before our scanners have assessed the area.

  2. (Happy) This is the opportunity of a lifetime! Only three recruits are required to join this expedition, and we’re the ones they chose.

  3. (Nervous) Something’s not right. These tremors don’t match up with the data we collected.

  4. (Angry) No! That thing is picking us off one at a time. If we want to live long enough for the rescue squad to find us, we have to stick together.

Alexandra

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 30-40
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Witty and charismatic, Alexandra is the fearless leader of the Atlantic expedition. Given that she is an award-winning biologist with years of experience under her belt, Alexandra’s team trusts her to lead them into the great unknown. Unfortunately, her esteemed reputation has given her an ego. She ignores her subordinates’ concerns about the beast until it is too late.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) All right, troops. We’re pushing forward. All members of our excavation team must report to their stations within the hour.

  2. (Happy) We’re floating on top of a scientific breakthrough! Once we unearth what’s down there, our research could soar to new heights!

  3. (Irritated) You’re under my supervision, cadet. If you want to remain in this facility, I expect you to follow my lead.

  4. (Urgent) Reroute our power supply to our secondary weapons! If that thing resurfaces, we’ll be ready for it.

Jamal

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 18-20
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Patient and reserved, Jamal is a promising biologist who listens more than he speaks. Although Jamal has several great ideas, his shy personality discourages him from sharing his opinions. However, his soft-spoken nature makes him a great confidant, which allows him to earn the trust of his colleagues.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Alexandra has led hundreds of maritime expeditions. If she wants to dispatch her excavation team before her results are finalized, we should trust her judgment.

  2. (Happy) This is incredible! I’ve never seen a humpback whale up close before.

  3. (Shy) I—it’s nice to meet you too. I look forward to working with you.

  4. (Afraid) This monster has demolished our facility’s power stations. If that was a conscious decision, it’s smarter than we think.
