Reaper - Auditions

As a part of our Young Artists' Initiative, MediaContex will work with its partners to create a pilot of an audiodrama of our students' original idea:
Picture

Synopsis

A psychic teenager, who can predict when people are going to die, must find and banish restless spirits that refuse to leave the mortal world.

Carlos, a psychic teenager, has visions that predict when people are going to die. When he attempts to prevent the death of an innocent person, he does not arrive in time stop her killer, and is inadvertently framed for her murder.

Before he can be arrested, Carlos is contacted by the Reaper Institute, an organisation that offers to hide him from the law in exchange for his services. He is employed to predict where deaths may occur, lead a medium to the deceased, and provide their ghosts with safe passage to the afterlife.

Together with Anaís, a young medium who is appointed as his partner, and Jeffrey, an exorcist who combats aggressive ghosts, Carlos guides spirits to the afterlife before they transform into dangerous poltergeists. Chaos ensues when Carlos encounters ghosts that refuse to go into the light.

Character List

Carlos

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Eighteen-year-old Carlos is plagued with visions of how people are going to die. Despite his terrifying gift and coarse personality, Carlos is a compassionate kid who will not hesitate to help those in need.

Unfortunately, his altruistic personality tends to backfire on him – his kindness encourages him to save innocent people before they die, but ultimately frames him for a murder he did not commit.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) When I woke up today, I didn’t expect to be accused of murder. I guess life’s full of surprises.

  2. (Encouraging) I know you’re scared, but I believe that you’ll be all right. Once you step into the light, you’ll be in a better place.

  3. (Sad) These spirits were once human beings. You don’t understand how hard it was to witness their deaths.

  4. (Angry) You don’t understand. I wasn’t responsible for her death!

Anaís

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Stoic and practical, Anaís is a medium with the gift of speaking to ghosts. Coupled with her psychic powers, which enable her to conjure force fields that ward off supernatural forces, she is one of Reaper’s top agents.

Independent and brave, Anaís faces deadly ghosts without beating an eyelid. Unfortunately, her occupation seems to have numbed her compassion, and she tends to forget that dangerous spirits were once living people. If she’s unsupervised, she may not hesitate to exorcise them in merciless ways.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) The Reaper Institute was established by a group of psychic agents. We specialize in finding lost souls and guiding them to the afterlife.

  2. (Happy) (Laughs) I guess you could compare us to the Men in Black. However, we primarily deal with ghosts instead of aliens.

  3. (Sad) Nobody knows exactly what happens after we die. All we can hope for is that we’d end up in a better place.

  4. (Angry) Don’t let him get away! If he transforms into a poltergeist, we won’t be able to change him back!

Jeffrey

Picture
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Jeffrey, the son of a famous pair of exorcists, has inherited his parents’ ability to banish the dead. Witty and humorous, Jeffrey attempts to lift his teammates’ spirits during their missions. Unfortunately, this leads him to make terrible puns.

As a child, Jeffrey fear and anger drove him to exorcise innocent spirits. Eventually, the Institute taught him to control his impulses, and only unleash his powers on aggressive poltergeists. Despite his reformation, Jeffrey feels guilty about his past, and sporadically thinks about the childhood ghosts he had banished.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) Mornin’, partner. Ready to kick some poltergeist butt?

  2. (Happy) Hey, what do you call the ghost of a door-to-door salesman? A dead ringer. Ba-dum-tsh!

  3. (Sad) When a spirit is exorcised, they cease to exist. Sometimes, I think about the ghosts that I banished as a kid, and I can’t help but wonder if they deserve that fate.

  4. (Desperate) If Dakota transforms into a poltergeist, I would have to exorcise her. We can’t let that happen.

Dakota

Picture
Gender: Female
Age: 30
Accent: Standard American is preferred, but not compulsory. You may audition with any accent you choose.

Spunky and unorthodox, Dakota is a witty spirit who refuses to pass on. After several years of haunting the Institute’s headquarters, she grows bored of terrorizing their agents, and eventually decides to work in their Intel division.

With the power to possess any technological object, she often dives into the Institute’s central communications system, and uses it to speak with their employees. This leads her to make witty, sarcastic remarks at her friends’ expense.

Lines:

  1. (Neutral) If you have any questions, please direct them to someone else. I refuse to spend my afterlife as your babysitter.

  2. (Happy) This is the new recruit? (Laughs mockingly) I’d give him three days before he dies on the field.

  3. (Disappointed) I was too young to die, but I was too old to order off the kid’s menu. (Sighs) I bit the dust at a terrible age.

  4. (Afraid) Please, help me! I–I can’t sustain my physical form!

If you are cast, your clips will be used for internal pitching purposes. If you are cast, our students will use your clips to create pilot episodes, which will be showcased to our network of producers.

Your audition clips will not be used without your permission.

If this project generates enough funding and support from our network, we will broadcast our pilot materials to the public. Until then, selected voice actors will be paid for their work, and they will be credited in our internal pitching materials.

We are generating pilot materials for internal pitching purposes, and are currently unable to publicly disclose the cast list.
